Overview
The consumer product manufacturing sector in India has seen robust growth in recent times. Several organisations involved in product research and development are creating avenues in the field of product design for research on smart machines, composite materials, customer needs and aspirations, including consumer emotions and behaviour. The Indian skilled workforce is recognised across the world and many organisations are in need of designers, developers, innovators, manufacturing, testing and marketing professionals and managers with a postgraduate degree in Product Design. This programme is aimed at preparing skilled professionals with creative skills and knowledge and human resources who can apply processes to meet the demands of the product manufacturing industry in regional, national and global organisations.
Objective
- To prepare students to have successful careers in the design and development of industrial and consumer products.
- To impart knowledge of the underlying principles of product design and development.
- To help students evaluate customer needs and demands and have the ability to suggest product design solutions which meet functional, ergonomic, and aesthetic requirements.
- To train students to use visual tools to generate product concepts and validate with physical models.
- To enable students to achieve an integrated understanding of product design and development methodology, visualisation, simulation, synthesis, integration, evaluation, presentation, and documentation.
Highlights
International Competitions
Students can earn 3 or 4 credits by participating in national or international competitions in order to be exempted from elective courses.
Exhibition and Shows
Participating in art and design or fashion related exhibitions and shows both help in exposing students to the real working of industry and account for credits in the grading system.
Elective Specialisation
There are 4 electives in the programme, grouped in a way that students can choose to specialise in a chosen field or stream. However, if the student wishes to opt for an elective module that spans multiple streams, the case may be considered subject to the affordability of academic logistics and approval by the module leader, HODs and Deans.
Online Elective
Students can choose electives through the online mode through MOOCs, SWAYAM, NPTEL and other equivalent platforms, provided they follow guidelines prescribed by the University for such courses.
Group Project
Group projects involve up to 5 students working together on interdisciplinary topics. Students can make teams in consultation with faculty members from across departments. As part of this, students are required to develop a report for assessment and need to demonstrate the working of a product. The IPR rights of all such work lies with the University only.
Industry Internship or Project
Students can opt for an internship in an industry, a business or research organisation during this module. Alternately, students can undertake a mini project that requires self-directed study to be pursued with an affiliated faculty member. It is also necessary for the student to submit a report and make a presentation to the members of the panel constituted by the HoD for assessment.
Dissertation and Publication
This course has two parts – a Dissertation and Publication. Each student has to undertake individual work on a dissertation on a chosen relevant topic. The topic needs to be approved by the committee constituted by HoD. When the dissertation is converted to a technical paper, it can be published in reputed conferences or journals.
Over its 21 years of existence, the Faculty of Fashion Design have ensured that students gain access to the industry while ensuring academic rigour, offering students a program that —
- Uses application-based learning.
- Offers research opportunities
- Offers internship, training and placement support with various worldwide universities and industries.
- Incorporates expert guest lectures from various institutions and industries.
- Includes workshops, industry visits, group discussions and debates.
- Has small batches and encourages in-depth learning.
- Involves Group Projects and a Dissertation as output.
- We offer accommodation in student hostels on our campus, and even offer third-party off-campus hotels where necessary to ensure students can focus on what matters the most.
- Our on-campus facilities include WiFi at any time of the day, 24/7.
- From a host of eateries and laundry facilities, we ensure that students have access to all facilities.
- We encourage students to participate in co-curricular activities on campus which include sports and cultural events, both at a university level and a faculty level.
- Focus on projects, dissertations and sponsored research.
